Keep your fingers crossed for me…

I dread the opening of the new school year. It’s the time that I am most vulnerable to coming down with something. All I can figure it that all the kids coming back from PSU from their summer vacation bring new bugs back with them. Classes started two weeks ago and sure enough I’m battling (hope it’s not swine flu).

Two of the last three years I managed to dodge a bullet by basically shutting down doing much of anything once I sense something coming on (usually it’s with a slight cough, throat tingle, or nasal congestion). Of course, last year, not only didn’t I dodge the bullet but I got hit with a cannonball.

I’m in shutdown mode now. I’m battling a tingly throat along with a slight cough. Knock on wood that it doesn’t explode into another asthma bout (or worse).

  1. Does your doctor recommend a flu shot? Heaven forbid you get any type of flu! Take care and keep us posted!

  2. I’m feeling a little better so hopefully I’ve managed to avoid any complications. I’m going to try to convince myself to spend the weekend at home. Unfortunately, I’ve got a couple of friends coming in for the football game that I haven’t seen in a few years and I’d like to catch up with them, plus a good friend is being surprised by his girlfriend for his fortieth birthday tomorrow, so it’s going to be a real temptation to go out. Just in case it’s actually swine flu that I have, I’ve got to remind myself that I don’t need to be going out and infecting other people.

  3. Sure but it really doesn’t matter. I need to stay in anyway so that it doesn’t fire up my asthma. The possibility that it might be swine flu is just more personal incentive. If I find out that it’s not, then that would be less incentive for me to actually stay home.

  4. I was a good boy (and good citizen) and stayed in all weekend. In fact, I haven’t even been out of the house at all for almost a week.

I’m starting to think that I’ve licked this thing. I still have a slight nasal congestion but the sore throat has pretty much passed. Another 24-48 hours and I should be safe.

  5. I think I’m 100% recovered. No symptoms today.

I’ve been thinking about the trip but haven’t made a decision yet. At the moment, I’m leaning toward just flying in and out of Madison and forgetting about the Chicago side of it since it doesn’t really fit anyone’s schedule.

I have to book my flights soon though so I’ll probably make the call sometime this week.

  6. For what it’s worth, I’ve decided not to go to London (no free tickets), so I’ll be around beforehand. Don’t know if that helps. Did you contact Steve F?

  7. Marilyn – As a United employee, I can get you a companion pass to London if you want to fly standby. Just by aware that people often get stranded somewhere for several days before any seats are available. You just have to be flexible on both ends.

It’s not completely free, but it’s a minimal fee. Let me know if you want me to check into the cost and the current availability of flights.

  8. No I didn’t contact Steve because my plan is to be in Madison NOT Chicago that weekend. My comment about the NW game was that I could book a flight to Chicago before the group firmed up their Madison plans with little risk because I could use the NW game as backup if Madison fell through. But the Madison plans are coming together so I definitely won’t be going to the NW game – hence no reason to contact Steve.

If you’re going to be around, I’ll think about coming in a day or two early but I probably won’t. I understand how weeknights are a problem for people to get together – plus Steve won’t be there. If we could have all gotten together on Sunday afternoon, it would have made a little more sense, but, at least at the moment it just looks like juggling things so that I can swing through Chicago for a couple of hour get together in the middle of the week isn’t worth the aggravation for all involved, including me.

  9. Larry – I certainly understand. Sorry we’re not available. Maybe some other time???!!!

Ron – Wow, thanks! How does that work? Doesn’t that cut into your allotment? Since Steve is on a tight schedule (he has to go to various cities in England) my going standby might not work. But thanks, I really appreciate the offer. Do explain to me how it works though…he really wants me to go to Hong Kong the next time he goes. Maybe with enough pre-planning a standby ticket could work for that trip.
