welcome

to Legends of the Falls version 2.0.

The first thing you are asking is probably “Why are you doing this? I was just getting used to the old version.”

The answer is progress. We just have to provide you with something new and better.

Actually, that’s not true. There are a couple of things driving this.

First of all, Blogger itself was going to force us to do something. You may have noticed for the last few weeks that every time you got onto our Blog, you were requested to convert to the “New” Blogger. If you actually go through that process you will be forced to get a Google account whether you want one or not. That kind of bugged me and started me thinking about alternatives.

Also as I looked into the “New” Blogger I found some things that I didn’t like. One of the selling points of the “New” Blogger was the “ease” of customization. Easy turns out to be a relative term. I had done considerable customization of our blog and was going to have to redo much of that custom work. Some of the features that “New” Blogger offers would have made that customization that I did last year a lot easier. But now I was going to have to redo them using the new features. That just created more work for me.

It also turns out that some of the new features require the blog to be hosted on Bloggers servers. Our blog has been run off of Gary’s website so we were going to have to convert. It also turns out that we were going to lose some functionality that we previously had by keeping the blog on our own servers (e.g. including video in the blog was one of those features that would have gone away).

All of the above were enough reasons for me to start looking around for other options. What I found, and what you are looking at now is WordPress, an open source content management system that has been fondly embraced by a huge portion of the blogging community. WordPress provides us with a ton of flexibility and several new features that we should be able to take advantage of in the blog (I’ll cover them on another page once I learn about them all myself) but the immediately obvious one is that we have a new home – www.WeAreTheFalls.com – personally I like that address much better than www.guffaw.com/fallblog/index.html. BTW – LegendsOfTheFalls was taken (however, WeAreTheMundane was not and I’m considering grabbing it also).
